Making Your Project Personal: A Persona Workshop
As Jon, I want to attend a workshop that helps me understand my users.

Did that sound forced?

Yeah, we agree. Far too often startups creates cardboard personas with little true understanding of who's problems they are solving. In this workshop, we'll learn how to quickly bring the human element to your startup, helping to prioritize efforts and enhance user delight, through personas. Following examples from over a decade of experience, we learn the ins-and-outs of personas and scenarios through a series of rapid individual and team exercises. We'll center the lessons around a fictitious project and progress through a workbook. At then end of the workshop you'll have experienced how to effectively bring a human element to your company through personas and scenarios.

Cultivating Narratives: The Importance of Powerful Storytelling To Secure Grant Funding
Trump's budget proposal for the 2019 fiscal year boasts significant cuts to 22 federal agencies and centers, including grant programs and institutes, that provide vital funding for locally-developed economic plans. Whether you're an existing nonprofit, for profit, or a budding entrepreneur, it is imperative now more than ever to have a solid understanding of said cuts, and their impact on the Detroit entrepreneur ecosystem, in order to successfully compete and qualify for grants.

In this workshop, Reda provides attendees with (1) an overview of said cuts, (2) an understanding of the types of grants available, (3) what type of business model is necessary to sustain funding, and (4) a discussion on the importance of creating powerful authentic narratives, through relevant samples of grants that were awarded or denied.

Launching a Digitally Connected, Design Thinking Ecosystem
Launching a Digitally Connected, Design Thinking Ecosystem

How will Pontiac CONNECT to Detroit? How might public spaces and places become human-centric vs. car-centric by design? And what might the FUTURE of Education look like from a learner-centered design point of view?

Our program uses a Connected Digital Design Thinking Process Platform to ask the deeper questions and look at the problems our social sector is facing while engaging in a broad, inclusive development conversation around the transformative possibilities in the areas of Education, Economic Development and the all important Transportation.

INTERACTIVE LINKhttp://bit.ly/DetroitStartupWeek - Leave a sticky note, let us know your thoughts on these topics!

We’ll consider the challenges and opportunities within a handful of projects we are immersed in: The Regional Transit Authority Citizens Advisory Committee, the National Street Service Pontiac Pilot City Project and the Pontiac Youth Recreation Millage Initiative. We’ll have community practitioners and thought leaders from each of these projects participating and most importantly we’ll be looking to engage the audience in a dialogue on how to move our Southeast Michigan region forward.

The success of our region and state is dependent on Detroit’s success! How will smaller post-industrial cities around the state learn from Detroit and adapt and change according to their own unique cultures and ecosystems?

Pontiac has recently become one of five National Street Service (NSS) Pilot Cities. We’ve been testing the development of this program designed for citizens to become familiar with their streets while launching “tactical urbanism” experiments to make them more human-centric vs. car-centric. We’ll discuss this program within the context of the Pontiac Phoenix Center / Public Plaza conversation that has been an ongoing conundrum, now approaching resolution.

Pontiac NSS:
http://www.theoaklandpress.com/general-news/20180501/pontiac-chosen-for-conceptual-design-thinking-national-street-service-program

Phoenix Center:
http://www.theoaklandpress.com/general-news/20180502/pontiacs-phoenix-center-sees-tentative-settlement-deal-to-end-six-year-legal-battle

Additionally our incubator has been serving as one of five Oakland County representatives on the Regional Transit Authority’s Citizens Advisory Committee (RTA-CAC). During last year’s Detroit Startup Week we hosted a symposium with SMART Bus to engage our audience in a dialogue to advocate for deeper connections and success for the RTA, after it failed to pass in the November 2016 election. This year we intend to deepen that conversation and consider elements of the RTA “Connect” plan that are entrepreneurial in nature (the Home Grown and Innovation Initiatives) and that will require an “all hands on deck” approach to pass the plan this November 2018.

Lastly we will weave in a conversation on the transformation of Michigan’s dysfunctional K-12 Education system tasked with developing world-class 21st Century talent. What if schools connected to the world our students encounter? What if project-based learning connected young people and their imaginations to these great challenges our Region / State / World is undergoing and allowed them to see a role for themselves in creating change?

We’ll share insights from our recent role in the Pontiac Youth Recreation Millage and the facilitation of innovative, conceptual grant development efforts inherent in the domains of “Design Thinking for Cities, Higher Education, K-12 Education and Libraries.” H. Bill Maxey, Community Leader and Activist will be in participating again this year and the Young Entrepreneurs Squad will showcase their ideas and businesses that will play a role in new incubation / co-working space opening in Downtown Pontiac at 7 N. Saginaw and in the Pontiac Power Week and Park(ing) Day 2018 upcoming events. Founder of Y.E.S Mary Evans will be shuttling us to Detroit with her Alternative Transportation Services company and will talk about her new product, Pet Poop Pod. Root Top Pontiac will discuss their sustainable greening projects happening in Downtown Pontiac.

Business Agility
As entrepreneurs, our success is never guaranteed. If business success was obvious to others, we'd have lots of competition. But if we can more rapidly identify and mitigate risk, discover and exploit opportunities, and create and sell value to customers, we will win. Sustained agility drove the success of Facebook and Berkshire Hathaway, of Obama and Trump. Whether you are a cutting edge entrepreneur or selling insurance, whether you are running a Democratic or Republican campaign, embracing agility drives success. Four actions create near-term business agility: agreeing on a big goal, measuring progress, experimenting to improve, and limiting work to adapt fast. A couple more create sustained agility. We'll talk about how sustained agility drove these successes and how you can create successes of your own.

Designing Entrepreneurial Ecosystems for Urban Sustainability: Using Communication-as-Design for Arts/Creative, Tech, and Food
This program stems from my ongoing research project aimed at designing diverse, inclusive, and viable entrepreneurial ecosystems for long-term urban sustainability, in Detroit. The research team has thus far conducted interviews with 25 representatives from entrepreneurial support organizations (e.g., TechTown, Build Institute) and 18 local entrepreneurs, and attended public events/workshops in the city. During this session, we will first share our preliminary findings on how the existing Detroit entrepreneurial ecosystem is designed, and how entrepreneurs are able to access it (10-15 min).

Then, we will break up into small groups to engage in "live problem-solving," using communication-as-design principles, to think about the opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs in accessing ecosystem support in three entrepreneurial spaces -- lifestyle/creative, technology, and food (20-30 min). Each group will then share their thoughts with the rest of the session (10-15 min), and we will note down your feedback to convey to key entrepreneurial support organizations within the ecosystem. Session attendees are also invited to join the ongoing research project; to join, please email me at rahul.mitra@wayne.edu.

Leading the Transformative Shift in Enterprise AI
How Professors and Researchers from The University of Michigan chose the Midwest over Silicon Valley, Redefined the Global Standard of Conversational AI and became one of the Fastest-Growing Startups

Conversational AI has seen a drastic rise in popularity and adoption over the past few years. However, survey a group of people that have actually used a chatbot and you’ll see an astounding amount of dissatisfaction with the experience. Professors at the University of Michigan researching virtual assistants and the AI, machine learning, and data centers required to produce them at scale, uncovered an entirely new approach to conversational AI, and in doing so, started Clinc. Our program will talk about this new machine learning approach and how a research and Michigan-based academic mindset led Clinc to become one of the fastest growing tech companies in the country.

Creative problem solving is the smart way of working and finding solutions to problems that may not exist yet. As the amount of data available increases exponentially, artificial intelligence has started to help find relationships in this data. I have worked on a system that will help negotiate a petabyte of data by finding relationships and visualizing insights making it easier for the end consumer to process.

Design for Innovation
INNOVATION IS FOR EVERYONE!

This session will include a brief talk and workshop on how design can be used as a strategic tool for accelerating innovative thinking in business. While innovation is often used as a buzz-word, design can help to de-mystify the meaning and assign tangible practices that can lead to innovation. Design methods can help you to better understand your niche audience, differentiate from competitors and reduce risk and uncertainty.

So yes, INNOVATION IS FOR EVERYONE! Not just for the large organizations like Apple and Google, but for startups and small businesses too. The workshop will demonstrate strategic design thinking / human-centered design collaborative process.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will have a better understanding of how design can support their business goals and be provided with a design tool to use right away.  Attendees of this session will also have a special opportunity to participate in the next Design for Innovation training at Grand Circus Detroit, August 8th and 9th.

Consumers Want More: Values-Based Marketing
Doing good is good business. Companies can and should contribute in some way to their communities. It’s the right thing to do, and it can differentiate a company from its competitors while benefiting the bottom line.

Consumers and businesses aren’t buying just based on their needs, they increasingly want to purchase from companies that represent their values. Technology and globalization have helped foster this change. Both have resulted in more convenience and product choices for consumers and businesses. There are also numerous mature product categories, meaning there are multiple offerings of essentially the same product, with less opportunity for differentiation.

Values-based marketing campaigns often involve nuanced and complex human emotions. The interactive nature and targeting tools available with digital marketing are ideal for having such a dialogue with your target audience. Social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and YouTube allow a company to engage with their audience on more sensitive topics.

Jobs To Be Done- How to Ensure You Are Building Things People Need
It seems crazy, but many startups fail because they build things that people just don't need. Ensuring that you are building a product or service that serves a real need for a market is challenging.

Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) is a conceptual framework to help you build, market and sell things that people, want, need, and use regardless of industry, product type, or vertical. It helps you understand why clients or customers "hire" different products for the jobs they need done, and gives you the ability to build better and more refined solutions not based on solutions, but on the problems facing the end user.

This is know as Collaborative Intelligence. Collaborative Intelligence is the combination of multiple people, along with multiple computational resources and provides the most powerful reasoning available. In this presentation we will discuss how to create and evolve your newsletters. This will be of value to both independents as well those within larger corporations, as both groups need to engage their readers in this evolving world. Tools reviewed will include: creating rich topic based news source environments to help entrepreneurs identify newsletter content; rich webpage creation; chat tools; archiving; sharing the entrepreneur's reasoning process through links, search tools, and news feeds. Engage Risk as Your Friend, not a Foe—to Impact Investor DNA—& Raise $ for Your Venture
FIRESIDE CHAT
The most frequent complaint I hear from entrepreneurs in Michigan is the lack of risk capital; investors willing to finance start-ups and early-stage companies vs. those with confirmed product/market fit and solid revenues. Michigan founders frequently travel to the E/W Coast seeking money and connections. While some raise cash, may don’t—and return home empty-handed—to face an unknown future.
With millions of dollars invested in not just tech/innovation, but food & beverage, fast-moving consumer goods, logistics, wholesaling and construction to name just a few, plenty of money exists in Michigan. So, if there is so much capital seeking opportunitieswhy is it such a struggle to get local investors to open their pocketbooks and finance technology, 1st-time entrepreneurs and early stage SMEs?
The culture of risk in the Michigan ecosystem is rarely spoken about, yet its impact is felt daily by entrepreneurs. In this talk, I speak to these issues and actions Michigan entrepreneurs can implement to ‘shape’ their business models to the risk attitudes and behaviors of local investors + learn to ‘sell risk, then opportunity’—to raise $ for their ventures?

Value for Detroit Entrepreneurs *

Success in raising money from local investors is not only about the ‘pitch,’ but the business model selected and executed which local $ will finance. Certainly, entrepreneurs must create and deploy business models which meet customer requirements for commercialization and revenue generation; but they frequently overlook which models the best match the risk behavior of wealth too. Selecting the business model which impacts the DNA of investors is the path to open their wallets—to finance your dreams, your hopes, and your aspirations.  This talk is not only of use to Michigan entrepreneurs but to the development of the Michigan ecosystem.

Alternative Idea Stage Funding

This unconventional session will discuss multiple alternatives to "idea stage" funding. Attendees may even walk away with cash or resources to help them test their first (or next) "hypothesis".

My name is Adam and I will moderate/facilitate. I like challenging entrepreneurs to tie resources to binary, short-term outcomes. I am a co-founder of Salt Collaborative, a community of experts using modern management and human centered design to create new structures that will support impact entrepreneurship and enterprise investment.

Joining me will be

  • Cassie Coravos representing Detroit Soup, one of the inspirations of this event!

  • Mike Westcott representing student entrepreneurs and change makers around the world and right here in Michigan.

  • Rob is representing a new TV SHOW doing something totally disruptive in the space.  This innovative TV show opens up investment opportunities to the adult TV and media viewing audience through its equity crowdfunding partner, the Independent Stock Market (ISM) for as little as $250 per investment.

  • Jeff Pituch representing optiMize, a social innovation incubator at UofM that grants $200K each year to students working on early stage impact projects.

We will spend the first part of the session exploring the macro problems related to getting funding to early stage folks who are trying to do good, trying to learn, or trying to hunt unicorns. The attendees will play a highly active role in this first part, we want to hear from you. We will spend the second part of the session exploring the macro solutions (crowdfunding, contests and hackathons, selling cereal boxes, etc). Finally we will talk about the specific solutions offered by each of our guests and we will encourage everyone in the audience to make a commitment to follow through with one or all of them!

And just for fun... and for mature audiences only, more fun.

STEM21: Developing the Next Gen of Innovators Using Lab Based Research Models and Impact Investment
The global economy is being propelled by STEM innovation. Competition for the brightest minds and the best ideas is no longer limited to where you live or where you went to school. Many communities throughout Metro Detroit are still struggling when it comes to the "3 way match"-i.e. developing a pool of diverse talent; managing an effective innovation ecosystem and providing seed capital for funding high potential STEM concept companies.

To change this narrative requires more risk taking, more effective methods for developing untapped talent within our community, and strategically leveraging socially conscience investment networks. The purpose of this program is to highlight how Ecotek Lab, a research facility for young inventors and innovators, has used its lab based research model-STEM21; partnerships with UN member countries and financial support from impact investment firms (IIFs) around the world to help youth in the City of Detroit launch and grow a portfolio of high potential STEM concept companies.

When it comes to education achievement, Michigan students of all races and income levels are near the bottom of the pack, when compared with their peers in other states. Building Economically Viable Business Models
Financial projections and analysis frequently an after thought to motivated entrepreneurs driven, and often blinded, by their passion. It is believed that many business owners are disconnected form their "numbers" and only review their financial statements to file taxes or present to a potential investor. Such approach leads to the decay of profitability and cash flow and often to the demise of the business.

This lecture/discussion promises provide a lively and engaging discussion where the speaker will provide guidelines to entrepreneurs on how to use financial projections to place and economic value on their idea and motivate business owners to take steps to increase the viability and value of their company.

Social Media Marketing in 2018: From Your Office to the World in 60min; for $1/Day
How the Facebook/Instagram's ad platform leveled the advertising playing field and allows any organization, business, band, and personal brand entity to compete with the worlds biggest corporations for coveted space in users smart phones.

The end goal is for attendants to visually see a global campaign take shape from ideation - development - launch (via fb/instagram ads) in less then 60 minutes using tools that every entrepreneur has access to, while the presenter is providing instruction and guides/manuals that will allow them to do the same with their own ventures.

We'll provide a brief overview of FB's business platform including an explanation on the latest Facebook changes due to recent events and what they mean to small business.

-We'll providing materials/checklists that guide them through the process of setting up their business to be able to carry out sophisticated, highly targeted national and global campaigns.

The format will be collaborative - we will pick one Detroit based brand or business that registers (most likely picked beforehand) and our creative team will be on hand to create a one minute video (b-roll, talking head, narration,) that they will put together in the background while the talk/workshop is starting (quick, guerilla style video using only an iphone, a usb mic, and a macbook) -

We guide attendants through the process of creating a FB page, Business Manager, Ad account (15 minute process) and then we will take that video and create a FB ad campaign (another 15-20 minute process with most of the research and content done beforehand) that will be submitted and launched nationwide before the talk is over. By the time the talk ends, they will have the ad showing up in their newsfeeds (with several contingencies set in place for any unforseen issues)

Value Creation from Boards of Directors
With the Michigan ecosystem populated with smart, energetic yet inexperienced CEOs, much work is needed to build density & depth in human talent, especially in CEOs and their participation in the company’s Board of Directors. If CEOs raised investor capital, some will insist on a Board seat as a condition of investment, whether or not that investor representative actually provides value-added, i.e., the heavy lifting which CEOs & the company needs for growth and prosperity.

In this talk, I discuss the disconnect which develops in Boards as the company transitions from seed to series D financing, solutions to overcome thru the management and composition of the Board and the creation of KPIs as the accountability measure for Board member continuation.
