Karen A.D. Burton, Assoc. AIA, NOMA - Co-founder & CEO of SpaceLab Detroit; founder and Chief Strategist at Building Industry Resources, LLC
Karen is a marketer, designer, entrepreneur, and urban explorer. She worked in architecture and construction for over 25 years on the design and technical teams for several entertainment, corporate, healthcare, and multi-family residential projects and as an adjunct instructor of architecture and interior design. Along her career journey, Karen found her passion for the business side of the AEC industry and shifted her focus to providing strategic marketing and business development services for architects, engineers, contractors and artists. As founder and chief strategist of Building Industry Resources LLC, she assists in increasing business through branding and communications.
Encouraging people and firms to reach their highest potential and fulfill their dreams is Karen’s passion. As a solo entrepreneur, she saw the need for those with small businesses like hers to explore new technologies and share ideas, best business practices, and workspace. She started SpaceLab Detroit as a MeetUp group, and now Karen and her husband, Bobby Burton, own and operate a 5200-square foot design and building industry-focused coworking and shared office facility in downtown Detroit.

It's just about time for RIZZARR's monthly event! In continuation of our Millennials Change Event Series, our next event will be held during Detroit Startup Week! This event will be held on Tuesday, June 19th at Grand Circus and is titled, "Millennials Change Fireside Chat: Using Social Action to Inspire & Innovate."
Now more than ever, Millennials are aspiring to become entrepreneurs to drive civic engagement and build their greater communities. They are especially leading this movement in Metro Detroit. Join us for this inspiring discussion that will feature Promote the Vote Deputy Director, Brandon Jessup, and Sit On It Detroit Co-Founder, Kyle Bartell. We will discuss their impact, their entities, and the power Millennials have in using social action and social entrepreneurship to create the positive changes that they wish to see in our society. We look forward to seeing you!
This unconventional session will discuss multiple alternatives to "idea stage" funding. Attendees may even walk away with cash or resources to help them test their first (or next) "hypothesis".
My name is Adam and I will moderate/facilitate. I like challenging entrepreneurs to tie resources to binary, short-term outcomes. I am a co-founder of Salt Collaborative, a community of experts using modern management and human centered design to create new structures that will support impact entrepreneurship and enterprise investment.
Joining me will be
Cassie Coravos representing Detroit Soup, one of the inspirations of this event!
Mike Westcott representing student entrepreneurs and change makers around the world and right here in Michigan.
Rob is representing a new TV SHOW doing something totally disruptive in the space. This innovative TV show opens up investment opportunities to the adult TV and media viewing audience through its equity crowdfunding partner, the Independent Stock Market (ISM) for as little as $250 per investment.
Jeff Pituch representing optiMize, a social innovation incubator at UofM that grants $200K each year to students working on early stage impact projects.
We will spend the first part of the session exploring the macro problems related to getting funding to early stage folks who are trying to do good, trying to learn, or trying to hunt unicorns. The attendees will play a highly active role in this first part, we want to hear from you. We will spend the second part of the session exploring the macro solutions (crowdfunding, contests and hackathons, selling cereal boxes, etc). Finally we will talk about the specific solutions offered by each of our guests and we will encourage everyone in the audience to make a commitment to follow through with one or all of them!
